Georgia: Road to Eurovision

Georgia is one of the youngest participant of the Eurovision Song Contest, since its debut in 2007, the country has participated ten times.

Georgia has missed only one edition, in 2009, when the European Broadcasting Union asked to re-write the song that contained mentions to the Russian president Vladimir Putin, but the country prefered to withdraw from the competition.

In Lisbon, Georgia will be represented by Iriao, an ethno-fusion band founded in Tbilisi. The band’s repertoire is based on Georgian polyphonic music and harmony, saturated with jazz and modern music elements.

The group’s name is derived from a phrase, “Iriao-uruao” which comes the famous yodeling singing style “Krimanchuli” of Georgian traditional polyphonic music.
